The fall season may start in September, but in Virginia the feeling of fall doesn’t really arrive until October. The humidity starts to break, leaving behind that crisp, fall atmosphere perfect for sweaters, fall wreaths, and pumpkin spice everything.
We love fall!
With all the busyness life throws at us these days, sometimes it seems the seasons come and go without notice. But, not fall! Fall brings with it warmth, family, friends, and the feeling of adventure. It would be a shame to miss out!
Don’t forget about fall this year! We’ve talked to our guests and asked them about the things they love doing each fall. Below we’ve compiled the TOP 10 and made an ultimate “October Bucket List” of their favorite activities for October in Williamsburg, Virginia!
Colonial Gardens October Bucket List in Virginia
Apple Picking
Virginia is known for it’s delicious, seasonal apples. Our state is unique in that there are many apple orchards where fruit lovers can go and hand-pick their own apples. It doesn’t get fresher than that!
Looking for a place to pick apples in the Williamsburg area? Here are some great local apple orchards locals and tourists adore!
Fall Farmers Market
We’ve highlighted the farmers markets of the Williamsburg and Yorktown areas in past articles and that’s because we just can’t get enough! Summer and fall are great times to visit farmers markets and it just doesn’t feel like fall without doing so. The stands are full of fall produce perfect for a nice spiced pumpkin bread or other fall treats!

Go for a Fall Drive
If you’re in the sightseeing mood, consider taking a drive along the Colonial Parkway. We have guests come from all over to take this drive. The Colonial Parkway is lined on each side by gorgeous trees that turn bright orange in the fall. This drive also takes you along the river. It is absolutely breathtaking, especially at sunset.
Buy Fall Candles
Scent is so closely tied to our fondest memories, sometimes it just doesn’t feel like fall until you get your favorite fall candles burning. Pick up your favorite scents at the largest Yankee Candle Store in the country! This is located right in the heart of Williamsburg, Virginia.
Antiquing
Antiquing is a favorite activity of many of our guests in the fall. Williamsburg has lots of local antiquing places to check out. The one we recommend most is The Williamsburg Antique Mall.
Warm, Fall Beverages
Before heading out on any of your adventures, you’ll probably want to pick up a warm, fall flavored beverage! However, instead of running to a Starbucks, why not try a Williamsburg local coffee shop? Aromas is our favorite! Located in the heart of historic downtown, they make specialty drinks for every season.
Watch a Movie
Grab a warm blanket, a cup of tea, your beau, and a great movie for a fall evening indoors! There are actually quite a few movies that were filmed in Virginia that would keep with the Virginia theme. Did you know that Lincoln, Dirty Dancing, Minority Report, Mission: Impossible, and The Incredible Hulk were all filmed in Virginia? Check one of these out!
Go on a Ghost Tour
Want to get into the Halloween spirit? Williamsburg has a few different companies that offer fun, spooky ghost tours. Check out the tour offered by Colonial Williamsburg!
Stay at a Cozy B&B
If you’re living in a city, you may not have the opportunity to enjoy the changing leaves and the fresh air of fall. Bed and breakfasts offer the cozy, country home venue for your fall adventures! There are many B&Bs in the Williamsburg area we can recommend, including our own! We were awarded the 2016 Excellence Award from TripAdvisor! Click here to check out our inn. And, regardless of which inn you choose, call them to ask about fall specials they may be running.
